Installing Interconnect (eGenius)

The Interconnect physical installation is performed by a qualified technician using the e-Genius Powered by Latch Interconnected Lock Series Installation Guide (PDF, included in the box; one variant for 4" CTC and one for 5.5" CTC). This article covers what to verify before the technician arrives, the high-level installation sequence, and what to confirm once the unit is live.

Before installation — confirm door compatibility

Have the technician verify the following before removing the existing lockset:

  • Door thickness: 1-3/4" (44.5mm)
  • Backset: 2-3/8" or 2-3/4". The backset is not field configurable — order the Interconnect variant that matches the door
  • Center-to-center spacing (CTC): 4" or 5.5". The CTC must match the existing door prep — see the next section for details
  • Mortise pocket: the door must be prepped for an interconnected mortise lock body and must match the cut sheet template for the selected CTC
  • Strike preparation: deadbolt and latch strike cutouts must match the strike geometry in the cut sheet
  • Door fit: the door must be plumb, properly hung, and close flush — alignment is important for the interconnected mechanism and smooth lever operation
  • Deburr all holes so moving parts function properly and the internal wiring isn't damaged by sharp edges

If any of these are out of spec, installation cannot proceed until the door condition is corrected.

4" CTC vs 5.5" CTC — choose the right kit

The Interconnect is sold in two center-to-center trim variants. The CTC is the distance between the deadbolt and the latchbolt on the door edge:

  • 4" CTC — tighter spacing, used for retrofits and narrower commercial mortise preps
  • 5.5" CTC — standard spacing for most commercial multifamily doors

The mortise body, electronics, and Lens are identical between the two — only the trim, the drilling template, and the strike geometry differ. Measure the door edge prep before ordering. Cut sheet templates for both spacings are linked in Attachments below.

Physical installation — high-level sequence

The installation guide (included in the box, also linked below) covers each step in detail with diagrams. At a high level the technician will:

  1. Prepare the latchbolt — set the backset (2-3/8" or 2-3/4") and set the latchbolt handing to match the door (Steps 1 and 2 in the install PDF)
  2. Prepare the deadbolt — verify the deadbolt cross is centered in the cutout (Step 3)
  3. Install the deadbolt and latchbolt into the door edge, push the faceplates flush, and secure the screws without overtightening (Step 4)
  4. Install the outside lever — rotate the spindle slot, install the cylinder, and press the lever onto the spindle (Step 5)
  5. Hand the outside trim assembly — set the handing on the outside trim per Addendum C of the install guide
  6. Install the outside trim assembly — align the trim, thread the wire harness over the deadbolt (do not pull on it), and position the thumbturn spindle (Step 6)
  7. Install the backplate — route the wire harness above the shelf and down through the slot, then secure the top (through the deadbolt) and bottom screws (Step 7)
  8. Install the thumb turn tailpiece and connect the battery tray (Step 8) – Ensure the deadbolt is extended whenever inserting the tailpiece
  9. Set the handing on the battery tray using the handing selector (Step 9)
  10. Install the batteries — 4 AA non-rechargeable alkaline. The motor activates approximately 5 seconds after the batteries are installed (Step 10)
  11. Functional test before closing the door — see the verification checklist below (Step 11 also covers installing the inside cover and lever)
  12. Install the strikes and deadbolt dust box (Step 12)

Use hand tools only — do not use a drill or other power tools. Power tools can damage the trim, lens, or mortise body.

Handing

The latchbolt hub and outside assembly are field reversible. The technician sets the handing in three places during the install:

  • On the latchbolt itself (Step 2)
  • On the battery tray handing selector (Step 9)
  • On the rear of the outside assembly

Both must agree with the actual door handing. The Interconnect supports RH, LH, RHR, and LHR configurations. See Addendum A in the install PDF for handing change procedures if a unit needs to be reversed after assembly.

Power

The Interconnect is battery-powered only. It runs on 4 AA non-rechargeable alkaline batteries loaded in the inside battery tray (Step 10) — there is no wired or permanent-power configuration. Do not attempt to hardwire the device.

Activating the device

Activation has two parts: the door must exist in DOOR OS, and the physical device is activated from the DOOR app.

1. Confirm the door exists in DOOR OS Log in to DOOR OS → AccessDoors → confirm the door where the Interconnect was installed is listed. If not, create it before proceeding.

2. Activate the device from the DOOR app

  1. Open the DOOR app → go to the Devices tab
  2. Tap Add a device
  3. Scan the QR code on the device or enter the serial number manually
  4. Follow the on-screen flow to complete activation
  5. Confirm the device appears as activated in DOOR OS → AccessDoors → door

A phone with the DOOR app must be within Bluetooth range of the Interconnect throughout the activation flow.

See Interconnect activation and initial setup for the full activation walkthrough, including first-time setup tasks like assigning the device to a Property Manager account and performing the initial Door Sync.

After installation — verify

Before closing out the installation, run through this checklist:

  • Cylinder test: insert the mechanical key, rotate one direction, and depress the lever to retract the deadbolt. Operation should be smooth — if there is binding, adjust the cylinder per Step 5 of the install guide before proceeding
  • App unlock: from the DOOR app (installer account), tap Unlock — the Lens spins and the lever hub engages; turn the exterior lever to confirm the latchbolt and deadbolt retract together (interconnected behavior)
  • Doorcode: enter a doorcode assigned to this door in DOOR OS — the Lens should respond and the lever hub should engage
  • Latch Keycard: tap a Keycard flat against the center of the Lens to test NFC reads, if Keycards are in use at this property
  • Interior lever and thumbturn: confirm both turn freely in both directions at all times, and that the interior lever also retracts both bolts together
  • Deadbolt extension: Rotate the outside lever up to confirm it extends the deadbolt. Turn the interior thumbturn — the deadbolt should extend and retract smoothly and fully. Then close the door and confirm it extends without binding against the strike
  • Door Sync: perform a Door Sync from the DOOR app to confirm credentials are current on the device

If the lever feels stiff or the bolts bind, check that the strike and armor plate are aligned (Step 12) and that the deadbolt was fully extended before the back cover and battery tray were installed (Step 8) — see the troubleshooting article for diagnostics.
