How do I use NFC unlock (Android)?

NFC unlock lets Android users unlock a door by holding their phone to the Latch Lens — no need to open the DOOR App first. It is faster than Bluetooth at close range and works even when your phone screen is off.

About this feature

NFC (Near Field Communication) is the same technology used by Latch Keycards and tap-to-pay cards. NFC unlock is available on Android only — Apple does not allow third-party apps to use NFC for door access.

Device compatibility: NFC is not available on first-generation Latch devices (R1, M1, C1). If your building uses one of these devices, use Hold Near to Unlock (Bluetooth) instead. NFC is supported on all second-generation and newer devices (C2, M2, M3, M-G, and later).

Before you start:

  • Android phone (NFC is not available on iOS)
  • Latest version of the DOOR App installed
  • NFC enabled on your phone (check in your Android Settings)
  • Second-generation or newer Latch device (C2, M2, M3, M-G, or later — NFC is not available on R1, M1, or C1)
  • Latch device on a supported firmware version

Enabling NFC unlock

  1. Open the DOOR App.
  2. Go to AccessSettings.
  3. Enable the NFC toggle.

Unlocking with NFC

Once NFC is enabled, hold your Android phone to the Latch Lens. The door unlocks without you needing to open the app.

Unlock from background (optional)

With NFC Background Unlock, you can unlock a door without opening the DOOR App or even unlocking your phone screen — just tap the lens.

To enable it:

  1. Open the DOOR AppAccessSettings.
  2. Enable Unlock from background (labeled "NFC Background Unlock" on some versions).

If your phone is lost or stolen with Background Unlock active: contact your device manufacturer and check Google's Android support for remote wipe options. Anyone with your phone could hold it to your lock and unlock the door without a passcode.

Turning NFC off

Go to AccessSettings in the DOOR App and disable the NFC toggle. You will need to use Hold Near to Unlock (Bluetooth) to open doors instead.

Why isn't NFC available on my iPhone?

Apple does not currently allow third-party apps to use NFC for door unlocking. iPhone users should use Hold Near to Unlock (Bluetooth) or Tap to Unlock instead.
