A Key is a collection of Doors. Assigning a Key to a user grants them access to every Door in that Key. Keys let you manage access at scale — instead of assigning individual doors to every resident, you create one Key and assign it to many people.
About this feature
When you edit a Key — adding or removing doors, enabling or disabling doorcodes, changing schedules — the changes apply to everyone currently assigned that Key. This makes Keys powerful for properties with many residents who share identical access patterns.
The Key name is not visible to residents in the DOOR App. Name keys to help your team distinguish them (for example: "Resident - Building A", "Staff", "Amenities").
Creating a key
- Log in to DOOR OS.
- Go to Access → Keys.
- Select Actions → Make Key.
- Enter a name for the key.
- Select the doors to include in this key.
- For each door, configure the optional settings:
- Enable Doorcodes: if enabled, each user assigned this key gets a unique doorcode for that door.
- Key Schedule: restrict the hours when users can unlock this door using their credential. For example: gym access only Monday–Friday 6 AM–10 PM.
- Select Create Key.
Assigning a key to a user
After creating a key, assign it to users from their profile in the People section. See Inviting users and assigning access for the full flow.
Editing a key
Go to Access → Keys → select the key → Edit. Changes apply immediately to all users who hold this key. For non-internet-connected doors, a Door Sync is required before the changes take effect at the lock.
Why managers assign Keys, not individual Doors
In DOOR OS, managers can only assign Keys to users — there is no option to grant access to a single Door directly. If you need a user to access just one door, create a Key that contains only that door and assign it.
The only context where individual doors appear selectable is when a resident invites a guest and they have access to multiple doors: the resident picks which doors the guest can use, and DOOR creates a separate Key per door automatically. This process is invisible to the resident and is not available to managers in DOOR OS.
Troubleshooting
- User was assigned a key but cannot open a door: the door may not have synced the new access yet. Perform a Door Sync near the affected door.
- User sees "Out of Schedule" error: a Key Schedule is restricting access to this door at the current time. Review the schedule on the key in DOOR OS. See I'm getting an 'Out of Schedule' error in the DOOR App.
